Japanese Industrial Standards, or JIS, are Japan’s national standards for products, data, services and test or assessment methods under the Industrial Standardization Act.
How buyers use the term
Identify the exact JIS number, edition and clauses required by the product or contract. Confirm whether the need is conformance to a standard, authorized use of the JIS mark, or a separate legal requirement.
| Checkpoint | Question to resolve |
|---|---|
| Entity | Which legal business will contract, invoice and receive payment? |
| Site or basis | Which facility, standard or rule supports the supplier’s claim? |
| Release | What evidence must be approved before the order, shipment or payment proceeds? |
Evidence to retain
Retain the cited standard and revision, supplier declaration, test evidence, certification scope where relevant and purchase specification.
Practical limitation
A reference to JIS without a number and edition is incomplete. JIS conformance and permission to display a certification mark are also different claims.
