Private label sourcing is the process of finding and qualifying suppliers that can produce goods sold under the buyer’s own brand. It covers product fit, supplier capability, commercial terms and the controls required before an order is placed.
What the buyer is sourcing
Start with the product specification, target cost, packaging, compliance requirements and expected sales channel. Decide which features are fixed and which may follow the supplier’s existing design. This prevents a search for a fully custom product when a proven base product would meet the brief.
| Area | What to establish |
|---|---|
| Product | Approved specification, samples and permitted changes |
| Supplier | Legal entity, production site, capacity and quality controls |
| Brand | Artwork ownership, packaging approvals and claim support |
| Commercial terms | Price, minimum order, tooling, lead time and payment milestones |
Where buyers get exposed
A branded sample does not prove repeatable production. Confirm the factory behind the offer, approve a production reference and define how changes will be controlled. If the seller is a trading company, record which factory will make the goods.
