International account details are the beneficiary and bank identifiers used to route a cross-border payment to the intended account or receiving arrangement. The required fields depend on currency, country, bank and payment network.
Which details may be required?
- Beneficiary or account-holder name
- Account number or IBAN
- SWIFT or BIC
- Bank name and address
- Local routing, branch or clearing code
- Payment purpose and reference
How do they differ from local details?
International details commonly support SWIFT or another cross-border route. Local details use domestic clearing identifiers in a particular country. Some receiving arrangements provide both for the same currency.
What should a payer verify?
Confirm the beneficiary name, currency, country, account identifier, bank code and payment purpose through an approved channel. Independently verify unexpected changes before release.
Why can a valid format still fail?
An IBAN or SWIFT code can be structurally valid but belong to the wrong account, unsupported currency or inactive route. Bank screening, intermediary requirements and beneficiary restrictions can also stop the payment.
What should the payment record retain?
Record the verified version of the details, source, verification date, currency, route, payment reference and approver. Avoid copying instructions from an unverified email into the payment system.
