Dock-to-stock is the receiving process and elapsed time from an inbound delivery reaching the dock until accepted goods are available in inventory for use or fulfillment.
Which steps are included?
Steps may include unloading, document verification, quantity check, inspection, labeling, system receipt, putaway and inventory release.
How is dock-to-stock time measured?
Dock-to-stock time = inventory-available timestamp − arrival timestamp
If a truck arrives at 09:00 and the goods become available at 14:30, dock-to-stock time is 5 hours 30 minutes. Define whether waiting before unloading is included.
Why does the measure matter?
Long processing can hide inventory, delay production or orders and create dock congestion. A shorter time is useful only if inspection and record accuracy remain adequate.
What causes delays?
Missing purchase orders, mixed pallets, labeling errors, inspection queues, quantity discrepancies and delayed system posting are common causes.
How can the process improve?
Use advance shipment notices, scheduled appointments, barcode standards, risk-based inspection and clear exception lanes.
