What Is Staff Augmentation?

Staff augmentation adds external workers to a client-managed team for a defined period or skill requirement.

Staff augmentation adds external workers to a client-managed team for a defined period or skill requirement. The client normally directs daily work and retains process accountability. This differs from a managed service, where the provider owns delivery of an agreed service.

How is Staff Augmentation structured?

The client identifies a capacity or skill gap and adds external workers to its existing team. The client usually assigns tasks, manages priorities and remains accountable for the process outcome, while the provider employs or supplies the personnel under the agreement. Access, supervision, time recording, security, substitution and exit arrangements should be explicit.

What should the Staff Augmentation operating record contain?

Define roles, skills, duration, rates, supervision, access, confidentiality, deliverables, replacement terms and knowledge transfer.

What does Staff Augmentation not establish?

It fills capacity quickly but can create dependency on individuals and leave process improvement entirely with the client.
