What should a product specification contain?

Why is a specification important?
It gives suppliers a common basis for quoting and production, and gives inspectors objective criteria. A photo or sample alone may not capture hidden materials, tolerances or performance.
Specification vs. approved sample
The specification is the controlled written requirement. An approved sample demonstrates agreed appearance or construction. When they conflict, the contract should state which controls.
How should revisions be managed?
Assign version numbers, approvals and effective dates. Communicate changes to the supplier and confirm their effect on price, lead time, tooling, certification and existing inventory.
What makes a requirement enforceable?
Use measurable language, units, test methods and tolerances. Avoid subjective terms such as “premium” unless acceptance evidence is defined.
