An HS code is a product classification under the international Harmonized Commodity Description and Coding System. The system organizes traded goods into sections, chapters, headings and six-digit subheadings used as the common base for national tariffs.
How is an HS code structured?
- First two digits: chapter
- First four digits: heading
- First six digits: international subheading
- Additional digits: national tariff or statistical subdivisions
What is the code used for?
Customs authorities and traders use it to determine tariffs, controls, rules of origin, trade remedies and statistics. Other requirements can also depend on classification.
HS code vs. HTS code
The HS provides the internationally harmonized six-digit structure. A Harmonized Tariff Schedule code adds national digits for a particular jurisdiction. An exporter and importer may therefore use related but not identical full codes.
How should a code be selected?
Gather the product's composition, function, manufacturing stage and technical characteristics, then apply the legal headings, notes and interpretive rules. Marketing descriptions and competitor listings are not enough.
What should be retained?
Keep specifications, drawings, composition, use, prior entries, rulings and written reasoning. Review classification after material design or sourcing changes and when tariff rules are updated.
