When does detention accrue?
The contract defines the starting event, free days, return location and counting method. The clock may continue even when a return depot is congested unless relief rules apply.
How is detention calculated?
If seven free days are allowed and an import container is returned on day ten, three chargeable days apply. At $125 per day, the illustrative charge is $375.

Detention generally concerns equipment outside the terminal. Demurrage generally concerns cargo or containers remaining inside the terminal beyond free time.
