A Bacs payment is a UK sterling payment processed through the Bacs system, commonly as Direct Credit or Direct Debit. The standard cycle spans three processing days: submission, processing and entry to the payer and recipient accounts.
Bacs suits scheduled payroll, supplier runs and recurring collections where predictability matters more than immediate arrival. Sponsoring-bank cut-offs and file controls must be built into the payment calendar.
Planning a Bacs supplier run
- Prepare and approve the payment file before the sponsoring provider's submission cut-off.
- Validate sort codes, account numbers, values and dates before the file enters processing.
- Reconcile rejects, returns and credited items to the original batch rather than treating submission as completion.
| Checkpoint | What finance should confirm |
|---|---|
| Day 1 | The payment file is submitted. |
| Day 2 | The system processes the entries. |
| Day 3 | Debit and credit entries are applied, subject to the institutions' controls. |
