What Is Account Management?

Account management is the ongoing coordination of a customer relationship, service commitments, issues, growth opportunities and commercial records.

Account management is the ongoing coordination of a customer relationship after or alongside the initial sale. It connects service delivery, commercial commitments, issues, renewals and growth opportunities. In outsourcing, the account manager does not replace operational governance or the customer’s decision owners.

What does account management cover?

  • Customer objectives, stakeholders and communication cadence
  • Contract, pricing and renewal milestones
  • Service performance and unresolved issues
  • Change requests and expansion opportunities
  • Risk, satisfaction and escalation
  • Accurate handoffs to delivery, finance and support teams

Account management vs. project management

Project management coordinates a defined body of work with a schedule and completion point. Account management governs the wider commercial relationship, which may include several projects and ongoing services.

Account management vs. service delivery management

Service delivery management concentrates on operational performance against scope and service levels. Account management covers the commercial relationship and customer plan. The roles may be combined, but decision rights and escalation paths should remain clear.

What should the account record show?

Keep the contract, stakeholder map, commitments, meeting decisions, service issues, changes, renewal dates and agreed follow-ups together. Avoid storing material promises only in personal notes or messages.
