A payment rail is infrastructure and a set of rules used to carry payment instructions, clear obligations or settle funds between participants. Domestic instant-payment systems, batch clearing systems, card networks and real-time gross settlement systems are different rails. Swift is primarily a messaging network, so the funds may settle through correspondent accounts.

A Quotable Payments route may end on a local rail even when the payer funds the transaction abroad. The rail identifies the movement layer; it does not by itself disclose the full route, FX treatment or Recipient-side evidence.
